This mid-February sunrise was an incredible backdrop for viewing the shipwreck that was discovered on Nantucket’s south shore, near Miacomet Beach, just days before. State archeologists believe the massive wooden beams and iron fastenings are a portion of the stern of the Warren Sawyer, a 19th century coastal schooner that wrecked on the island on the night of December 1884 around 11 pm, loaded with cotton and scrap iron. It had been headed for Boston from New Orleans, but was blown off course by gale force winds.
