The Maria Mitchell Association in Palm Beach

Updated: Mar 4

On February 5th the Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) held a cocktail event for attendees to learn about their NEW Discovery Center & Aquarium. The event was hosted by Ann DesRuisseaux and Suzanne & David Frisbie at Le Bar & Vin Palm Beach. Over 50 guests, mostly Nantucketers, including David and myself, were treated to an informative presentation, given by Joanna Roche, MMA Executive Director. We learned about Maria Mitchell herself, the programs and initiatives of the organization, upcoming events to participate in, and the numerous ways to support the MMA.

For those who are not familiar with the MMA, it was founded in 1902 with the goal of preserving the legacy of Nantucket native astronomer, naturalist, librarian, and educator, Maria Mitchell. After she discovered a comet in 1847, Mitchell’s international fame led to many achievements and awards, including an appointment as the first American professor of astronomy at Vassar College. Maria Mitchell believed in “learning by doing” and today that philosophy is reflected in the MMA’s mission statement, programs, research projects, and other activities.

The MMA mentors and has launched countless students into careers in the sciences, and they have sparked an interest in the natural world for tens of thousands of families who have participated in their award-winning programs.

Contributions help to sustain its operation of two observatories, a natural science museum, an aquarium, a research center and preserves the historic birthplace of Maria Mitchell. A wide variety of science and history-related programming is offered throughout the year for people of all ages, including their award-winning STEM programming.
